Jakarta Biennale 2011
JAKARTA MAXIMUM CITY: SURVIVE OR ESCAPE?
Venue: National Gallery, TIM, and Bentara Budaya Jakarta
15 December 2011 – 15 January 2012
Curators: Bambang Asrini Widjanarko, Ilham Khoiri, and Seno Joko Suyono (Indonesia)
The 14th Jakarta Biennale held in 2011 came with the big theme of “Jakarta Maximum City: Survive or Escape?”, where the city’s dynamics became the inspiration for the edition, attended by 55 domestic artists and 17 foreign artists.
The tug-of-war between manifold socio-economic and cultural interests creates Jakarta’s paradoxes. This had also become the rationale for the 2009 Jakarta Biennale XIII, when the Jakarta Arts Council as the organizer viewed the situation of Jakarta as an arena of public contestation over space.
However, the 14th JB curators took a different approach. Jakarta is characterized by its typical growth to its fullest, at maximum. At the same time, the inhabitants tend to be escapist and pragmatic in their survival; for the sake of “escapism” or “survival” in the dynamics of Jakarta. The two words of the subtitle, despite their literal divide, can mean similar, under a critical view in Jakarta’s context. An ambiguity arises in a paradoxical situation.
